Supporting Trainee Engagement at the 2025 Critical Care Canada Forum Deceased Organ Donation Stream

As part of our commitment to building capacity and fostering meaningful engagement in donation and transplantation research, CDTRP recently offered complimentary conference registration to support trainees and early-career professionals in attending the Deceased Organ Donation Stream at the 2025 Critical Care Canada Forum (CCCF-DDS) as part of our co-sponsorship of the event with Trillium Gift of Life Network and Canadian Blood Services. This enabled Vanesa Berati (MSc), a Research Administrative Assistant at London Health Sciences Centre, to attend CCCF-DDS.

For Vanesa, CCCF-DDS was a formative experience that extended far beyond technical learning. The conference highlighted how deceased organ donation is shaped not only by science and policy, but by lived experience, ethics, and the realities faced by patients and families at the end of life. For her, powerful sessions like Maryam De Groef’s reflection on loss, grief, and the “gift of life” reinforced the human dimensions of this work.

“I am grateful to the Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program (CDTRP) for providing complimentary registration support, which made my participation in this conference possible.”

Vanesa also reflected on emerging conversations around death determination, trust, sustainability, and patient-centred care, noting how these dialogues are reshaping both research and clinical practice. The discussions among stakeholders further highlighted that progress in organ donation and critical care depends on collaboration across diverse perspectives.

CDTRP is honoured to provide opportunities that help trainees strengthen not only their skills, but their sense of responsibility as future leaders in the field.
