The Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program (CDTRP) will host the 7th edition of the Patient, Family and Donor Research Forum from June 8-10, 2026. Each year, the PFD Research Forum program is designed to strengthen patient and community engagement capacity across donation and transplant research, policy, and knowledge mobilization.

This year, the PFD Research Forum theme is Pathways for Partnership: Centring Indigenous Priorities in Donation and Transplant Systems. Across Canada, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) are disproportionately affected by end-stage organ failure yet experience persistent inequities in access to culturally safe organ donation and transplantation care and services. Further, patient and community priorities are now well understood in donation and transplant research.

The 2026 CDTRP PFD Research Forum program will bring together Indigenous and non-Indigenous national and international speakers, including persons with lived experience, who have expertise in patient and community engagement in health research. Through sessions, panel discussions, and workshops, the program will:

Learning Objectives
  • Strengthen capacity among researchers, trainees, PFD partners, and health professionals to engage in ethical, community-driven research partnerships with Indigenous Peoples.

  • Create space for Indigenous patient, family, and donor voices and lived experiences to inform priorities for donation and transplantation research, policy, and practice.

  • Support learning on cultural safety, partnership, and appropriate engagement protocols when conducting research with Indigenous Peoples.

  • Explore Indigenous data sovereignty principles, including community and individual governance of data, in the context of donation and transplantation research.

  • Highlight community-driven and Indigenous-led programs and research approaches that fosters ethical collaboration and partnership.

  • Support knowledge mobilization by sharing tools, resources, and promising practices that advance patient and community engagement with Indigenous communities.

  • Identify priorities and opportunities for community-driven research that address equity and access in organ donation and transplantation systems.
