In Memoriam: T. Murray Wilson

With a heavy heart, we inform our members of the passing of Mr. T. Murray Wilson on January 5, 2023.  Murray was a vocal advocate for OTDT system changes who brought his professional expertise in economics and lived experience as a liver transplant recipient to push for evidence-based policy changes.

Murray was a co-founder of the Alberta ORGANization Group, a community collaborative that advocates for enhancements to the donation and transplantation system in Alberta. With the help of these efforts, the Alberta Government recently passed a Private Members Bill legislating mandatory referral and other system changes in the province.

Since his liver transplant, Murray became increasingly involved in the science of transplant medical research and practice in Canada. He was involved with Alberta Transplant Institute as a member of the Executive Committee and Patient, Family, and Donor Lead for the Optimizing Graft Use Working Group.

In 2015, he joined the Transplant Research Foundation of British Columbia as a member of the Board of Directors and was co-chair of the Research Policy Committee.

As a Patient, Family, and Donor Partner within CDTRP, Murray was highly active – always bringing his questions, comments, and clever sense of humor to webinars and theme calls. He was a patient partner on various projects and committees focused on liver transplantation and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, Murray was a co-author of the International Donation and Transplantation Legislative Policy Forum’s Tissue Donation working group, whose manuscript was accepted for publication in December 2022.

Throughout all his work, his passion and desire to improve patient lives were evident. He will be dearly missed by the donation and transplantation community.

A Commemoration of Life will take place in Calgary and virtually on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

All are welcomed to join the Commemoration.
