Project Title: Towards integration of sex and sex hormones into transplantation precision medicine

Lay Abstract

This study looks at why men and women sometimes have different health outcomes after a kidney transplant. Although women generally live longer than men, particularly during puberty or menopause they face greater risks after transplant. Men may also experience hormone changes that affect recovery and have been shown to benefit from hormone therapy. Despite this, sexual health and hormones are rarely considered in transplant care, and patients of different ages, ancestries and genders are usually treated the same.

Our team will use information from a large group of kidney transplant patients in British Columbia, along with stored blood samples. We will measure hormones in these samples and link them to each person’s medical history. Thus, we hope to understand how hormone levels influence recovery, long‑term kidney health, and transplant success.

This project supports the mission of the CDTRP by addressing a hidden barrier to long‑lasting transplant success: the lack of hormone‑ and life‑stage-specific information to guide care. If we can identify patients who are at higher risk because of their hormone patterns, transplant teams can monitor them more closely, and adjust treatments earlier. This work may also open the door to new treatments, including hormone‑based therapies, and focuses on providing information about sexual health and hormones to patients and doctors.

By improving how we understand and manage life stage and hormone‑related risks, this project aims to help more Canadians enjoy long, healthy lives after transplant and move us closer to the goal of making transplantation a lasting and sustainable cure.
