2026 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities, and provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing impacts of residential schools and the work of reconciliation.

For CDTRP, reconciliation means co-building respectful, reciprocal, and accountable relationships with Indigenous Peoples and communities, and working together to shape how research is developed, conducted, governed, and shared. This includes co-developing research priorities, approaches, partnerships, and knowledge mobilization activities in ways that recognize Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and community priorities, and that supports Indigenous patient and community leadership throughout the research process.

This year’s Patient, Family, and Donor (PFD) Research Forum, Pathways for Partnership: Strengthening Patient and Community Engagement with Indigenous Communities, brought together Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, health professionals, patient partners, and people with lived experience. Sessions explored Indigenous approaches to engagement, trust and organ donation, cultural safety, Indigenous data sovereignty, and community-driven research.

The [2026 PFD Research Forum Report] brings together key discussions and lessons from the Forum, helping carry these conversations and learnings forward.

At CDTRP, we recognize that meaningful research partnerships are an important part of building a more inclusive research environment. This is reflected in our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes meaningful engagement, sustainable partnerships with patients, families and donors, and sharing knowledge in ways that can support communities and the broader donation and transplantation field.

As we mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we invite our community to reflect on how we can continue to build respectful and meaningful partnerships in donation and transplantation research.
