How Provincial Health Systems Govern Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: Lessons So Far<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

This presentation draws on an ongoing qualitative study, which investigates why rates of Living Donor Kidney Transplantation (LDKT) vary widely between Canadian provinces.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>By understanding and comparing the provincial systems<\/span>\u00a0in BC, ON and QC<\/span>, we hope to help improve LDKT in provinces with comparatively lower rates.\u00a0<\/span>During the presentation, we will discuss the some of the problems faced by patients, families and donors as they navigate the health system to pursue LDKT. We will discuss our partnership and shared goals as a research team, as well as some of our findings so far.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Anna Horton is\u00a0<\/span>a qualitative researcher at the research institute of the McGill University Health Centre.\u00a0<\/span>Following an undergraduate degree in Social Anthropology at Edinburgh university she\u00a0became interested in medical anthropology and the application of\u00a0<\/span>anthropological frameworks to\u00a0<\/span>study of healthcare\u00a0<\/span>policies<\/span>, which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she pursued<\/span>\u00a0during an MSC in Family Medicine at McGill University<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Now, she applies her background in social sciences to the field of transplant nephrology. Her\u00a0<\/span>current<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>nvestigates<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>differences in how Canadian provinces organize and govern Living Donor Kidney Transplantation (LDKT), in order to better understand and address disparate rates of LDKT across the county.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvie Charbonneau<\/span><\/span>‘s bio<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Sylvie Charbonneau is a<\/span>\u00a0retired entrepreneur,\u00a0<\/span>with more that 30 years of experience in change management. She is also<\/span>\u00a0the mom of 2 and the grand<\/span>ma<\/span>\u00a0of 2.\u00a0 In 2012\u00a0<\/span>her<\/span>\u00a0son\u00a0<\/span>needed <\/span>a\u00a0kidney\u00a0<\/span>transplant,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span>\u00a0decided to become a living donor. After the transplant,\u00a0<\/span>she wanted to give<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0back and got involved as a volunteer for the Quebec branch of the Kidney Foundation. Since then, she served on the Board of Directors of the Kidney Foundation, for several year,\u00a0<\/span>in different roles<\/span>. She is currently President of the National Board. She is also involved in different committees as a representative of living donors<\/span>\u00a0and advocating for organ donation<\/span>.
