New Member Profile: Dr. Karthik Tennankore, at the intersection of nephrology, machine learning, and frailty<\/h4>\n

The CDTRP has been delighted to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>welcome many new members in 2020. We\u2019ll be sharing information on their research expertise and interests through our New Member Profile series. Please join us this week in welcoming Dr.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Karthi<\/span><\/span>k<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Tennankore<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of Dalhousie University\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to Theme\u00a0<\/span><\/span>5\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>Restore Long<\/span><\/span>-term Health<\/span><\/span>) of the CDTRP!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

What are your fields of expertise and interests in research?<\/h5>\n

My interest is generally on improving outcomes for kidney transplant recipients and those waiting for a kidney transplant. I have interests in studying the effects of frailty on outcomes for waitlist candidates and those after transplant, machine learning to optimize outcomes for patients after transplant and characterizing and improving physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour for kidney transplant recipients.<\/p>\n

What new areas of interest would you like to develop or with which different disciplines or specialist(s) would you like to collaborate within the\u00a0CDTRP?<\/h5>\n

Aligned with my fields of expertise, I am interested in working with experts in computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, experts in exercise physiology and behaviour change, and geriatric medicine specialists given my interest in frailty. I think there is an unmet need in transplant to really understand how best to modify or improve outcomes across these areas, so I would be interested in potentially looking at future interventional studies (i.e. clinical trials) that might address one or more of these areas.<\/p>\n

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!<\/h5>\n

I used train in karate years ago and I’m excited that I’m now “re-learning it” in a family class with my two boys (as long as my knees hold up!)<\/p>\n<\/div>
