Cirrhosis is a condition in which long-term liver damage causes scarring that can affect how the liver functions. For people living with cirrhosis, nutrition, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors can play an important role in supporting health and quality of life throughout the transplant journey.

In October 2025, researchers, healthcare providers, and patient, family and donor (PFD) partners came together for a two-day event hosted by Dr. Chantal Bémeur and Dr. Isabelle Doré to explore this question. The discussion brought together research evidence and lived experience to identify practical strategies for supporting health and quality of life for people living with cirrhosis.

Building on these conversations, CDTRP co-developed a Fast Fact and two infographics that translate key insights into accessible resources for patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and others supporting people living with cirrhosis.

The resources highlight the importance of personalized and sustainable approaches to nutrition and physical activity, including adequate nutrition, gradual habit-building, exercise, and access to appropriate supports. They also explore the role of prehabilitation before transplantation, digital tools, and holistic approaches to wellness across the transplant journey.

They also point readers toward additional patient education and support tools from organizations across Canada and beyond, helping connect people with information they can discuss with their healthcare teams.

This work reflects CDTRP’s broader commitment to mobilizing research knowledge in ways that are accessible, relevant, and responsive to the needs and priorities of patients, families, and donor partners.

““While I cannot fully know what it is like to live with cirrhosis, I have the privilege of working alongside people who do. Their experiences remind us that living well with liver disease is about much more than medical care alone. It is about having access to the right information, meaningful support, and practical strategies that fit into everyday life. Our hope is that these resources help people feel informed, supported, and empowered to make choices that can contribute to their health and quality of life throughout their journey.””

-Dr. Chantal Bémeur

View the resources

Fast fact: https://cdtrp.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/What-do-we-know-about-nutrition-and-lifestyle-to-support-people-living-with-cirrhosis.pdf

Resources: https://cdtrp.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/RESOURCES-TO-HELP-YOU-MANAGE-Nutrition-and-Exercise-for-cirrhosis.pdf

Strategies: https://cdtrp.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Practical-strategies-to-address-nutrition-and-lifestyle-for-people-living-with-cirrhosis.pdf

[1

post-34972","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general
["GET
