Living Donation Week: Why Representation Matters Across Donor Pools<\/strong><\/p>\n

Living donors transform lives, and advancing equitable access to transplantation remains a priority for the CDTRP. This Living Donation Week, we are spotlighting research helping to improve disparities in blood, stem cell, and donation donor pools.<\/p>\n

A recent publication by Bonnie Lu et al, Addressing racial disparities in representation across blood, stem cell and organ and tissue donor pools,<\/a><\/u><\/em> highlights an important challenge: racialized populations are underrepresented in both living and deceased donor pools.\u00a0 Patients from some racialized and ethnic populations may be more likely to require a kidney transplant due to disproportionately higher rates of end-stage renal disease. Because patients are more likely to find an HLA-matched kidney donor from within their own racial and ethnic group, a lack of representation in donor pools can contribute to longer waiting times and lower transplantation rates.<\/p>\n

The fast fact, Addressing Racial Disparities in Representation Across Blood, Stem Cells, and Organ and Tissue Donor Pools,<\/a><\/u><\/em> co-developed by CDTRP and Lu et al. accompanies the publication. It highlights common barriers to donation, including mistrust in healthcare, knowledge gaps and sociocultural factors, and identifies opportunities to address inequities through culturally tailored education, community engagement, trust-building and systemic policy change.<\/p>\n

This work reflects our commitment to advancing equitable donation and transplantation through research, collaboration and knowledge mobilization.<\/p>\n
