PSC is often seen with inflammatory bowel disease, which impacts the gut. PSC has no cure and a liver transplant is often the only solution. In some cases, PSC can even return on the transplanted liver. In this study, we are trying to understand if changes in the gut can cause PSC to return. This trial will focus on two components of the gut : bacteria, called the microbiome, and bile acids.

This study will take place at the Centre hospitalier de l’Universite de Montreal (CHUM). Adult patients with a liver transplant for PSC can be candidates. A one-time visit will combine imaging of the liver (with MRI) and blood and stool tests. The tests will check for microbiome and bile acid composition. The results will compare people with and without recurrence of PSC on the MRI. To see if this has an impact on quality of life, a questionnaire will look at PSC symptoms.

This study will identify if there are changes in the gut in PSC recurrence after transplant. This can be a target for PSC treatment in the future. The findings of this study will help researchers understand why PSC recurs. The ultimate goal is to improve quality of life after liver transplant in PSC.

View the results of the 2026 CDTRP Research Innovation Grant Competition.

View past CDTRP Innovation Grants recipients here.

[1,75

post-34760","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general","category-featured
["GET
