This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100013791\/1535470872302\">First Nations<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100014187\/1534785248701\">Inuit<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100014427\/1535467913043\">M\u00e9tis<\/a> peoples. In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June\u00a021, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day, now known as <strong>National Indigenous Peoples Day<\/strong>. For generations, many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100013785\/1529102490303\">Indigenous peoples and communities<\/a>\u00a0have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.<\/p>\n<p>National Aboriginal Day (now National Indigenous Peoples Day) was announced in 1996 by then Governor General of Canada, Rom\u00e9o LeBlanc, through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/SI-96-55\/page-1.html\" rel=\"external\">Proclamation Declaring June\u00a021 of Each Year as National Aboriginal Day<\/a>. This was the result of consultations and statements of support for such a day made by various Indigenous groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) called for the creation of National Aboriginal Solidarity Day<\/li>\n<li>in 1995, the Sacred Assembly, a national conference of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people chaired by Elijah Harper, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples<\/li>\n<li>also in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a National First Peoples Day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On June 21, 2017, the Prime Minister issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pm.gc.ca\/eng\/news\/2017\/06\/21\/statement-prime-minister-canada-national-aboriginal-day\" rel=\"external\">statement<\/a>\u00a0announcing the intention to rename this day National Indigenous Peoples Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100013718\/1534874583157\">Learn more here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:30px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-double sep-solid\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;border-color:#e0dede;border-top-width:1px;border-bottom-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><h5 data-pm-slice=\"1 3 &#091;&#093;\"><strong>Learning tools to enhance relationships between researchers and Indigenous peoples<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In the spirit of learning and reconciliation, <strong>Can-SOLVE CKD Network<\/strong> has developed a new learning tool developed that aims to help health researchers build respectful partnerships with Indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cansolveckd.ca\/learning-pathway\"><strong>Wabishki Bizhiko Skaanj Learning Pathway<\/strong><\/a> offers a range of resources to enhance researchers\u2019 knowledge and awareness of racial biases, Indigenous voices and stories, the impact of colonization on Indigenous health, and culturally safe health research practices. The learning pathway brings together existing resources, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanyas.ca\/\">San\u2019yas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fnigc.ca\/ocap-training\/\">OCAP<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kairosblanketexercise.org\/\">KAIROS Blanket Exercise<\/a>, with original content developed by the Can-SOLVE CKD Network.<\/p>\n<p>Participants may complete one or more components of the pathway depending on their learning needs and ability. Self-reflection will be a critical part of each component. This bundle comprises a list of useful resources that learners can review at their own pace, ranging from academic articles and books to videos and podcasts. The learning pathway aims to enhance researchers\u2019 knowledge and awareness of racial biases, Indigenous voices and stories, the impact of colonization on Indigenous health, and culturally safe health research practices. The learning pathway comprises existing resources in addition to original components developed by the Can-SOLVE CKD Network.
